Blackmail by computer virus

If you have real time virus protection on your computer – and you should – you’re probably always on the alert for messages telling you a virus has been found.

And when you see those messages, the first instinct is to click the ‘Remove Virus’ button in the warning message.

But don’t be in a hurry to do that. Because doing so could infect your computer with one of the nastiest viruses around (applies to Macs as well as Windows).

The way this virus works is when you visit an infected web site, it will pop up a message that looks exactly like the virus warning message you see from your legitimate anti-virus program.

But it’s a fake warning. And should you click ‘Remove Virus’ in that fake message, the virus is loaded onto your computer, and it immediately changes your computer desktop to a black screen, and hides all your programs and files.

Just as you are feeling all is lost, the virus pops up a message telling you the solution to the problem is to buy their ‘smart virus eliminator’ software.

Basically they crash your computer, then blackmail you into buying their product.

You’ll want to avoid doing this at all costs. You don’t want to pay crooks for their evil deeds, and you don’t want them installing any other software on your computer.

So next time you see a virus warning message on your computer, don’t immediately click the ‘remove all’ button on the message.

Doing so could install a virus instead of removing it.

If you see that warning message on a web page, don’t click the remove virus button. Instead, immediately leave the web site, and then close down all programs and reboot your computer.

I’ve posted more details about this as well as screen caps of the fake virus message in our discussion forum.

And if you ask me, they should find the people behind this nasty blackmail virus scheme and send them to a work camp in Siberia.
