The latest ‘Web Marketing Today’ blog post is titled “Google Analytics: Understanding Local Traffic”.

Kevin Webster says, “Google Analytics can help local businesses understand more about the traffic on their websites. Whether the site has an ecommerce component or simply exists to send foot traffic through the front door, Google Analytics can provide insight into who is viewing.

In many cases, long before a patron enters your local retail store, they’ve been on Google, Bing, Facebook, or another site researching a need. Other people in other places are likely researching that exact same need, and may end up on your website. These visitors from outside of your local area won’t have the same value to you as someone in your neighborhood. In particular, for a restaurant or a local boutique, it’s likely they will never enter your business. You may have 200 visitors on your site today, but if 90 of them live 100 miles away, the data they generate in Google Analytics isn’t truly relevant. It clouds the picture of what is actually bringing you new business”.
