Pew Internet and American Life Project has revealed, in a study, that web searches are the no. 2 task performed on the internet, behind e-mails.

The study stated that, on an average 74 million American adults use the internet, 77% of which use it for e-mail services and 63% use it for web searches.

The results show that the number of people using search engines on any given day has increased from about 38 million in June 2004 to 59 million in September 2004, showing an increase of 55%. A comparative study with the report of June 2004 shows that search engine users have increased from 30% of the internet population to 41%.

Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Internet Project, said, “Most people think of the internet as a vast library and they increasingly depend on search engines to help them find everything from information about the people who interest them, to transactions they want to conduct, organizations they need to deal with, and interesting factoids that help them settle bar bets and backyard arguments.” [Source]

A study by comScore reveals that Google was the most visited search site in October 2005. The website had 89.8 unique visitors. Yahoo followed, with 68 million unique visitors. They were followed by MSN search and Ask Jeeves with 49.7 million and 43.7 unique visitors respectively.
