A study by Business Software Alliance, BSA, says that lack of security on the internet will affect online holiday shopping this year. The study shows that one out of four customers will not shop online for gifts this holiday season.

96% of online consumers who participated in the survey said that protecting oneself online is very important. 53% said that they are going to upgrade the security measures on their personal computer within the next three months. 71% were worried about bidding or selling goods on auction sites.

Neil MacBride, VP of legal affairs, BSA, said, “The good news is that we have found consumers are taking proactive steps to protect themselves to ensure a safe online shopping experience.

The bad news is that nearly two thirds say Internet security concerns will affect their shopping at some level this year. Our message to consumers is that a user’s most important protection is his or her own awareness.” [Source]

According to the survey, 84% believe that Internet retailers have not taken proper measures to protect customers. 76% wish to learn more about how to protect themselves online.

BSA and the Better Business Bureau offer tips to avoid security risks while shopping online:

Install Security Updates.
Install Anti-virus software and make sure it is activated.
Install a firewall.
Trust your instincts.
Do your homework.
Understand the “Privacy Policy”.
Ensure Secure Payment.
Check the vendor’s identifying information.
