Google has integrated virus scanning capability in Gmail.
Gmail will automatically scan any attachemt that users attempt to send or receive. If the attachment carries a virus, gmail attempts to clean it.
A Help Center page on Gmail says “Get an automatic check-up every time you open or send a message with an attachment. We even try our best to remove viruses so we can protect you against all the ones we find.” [Source]
If Gmail is unable to clean the attachment of known viruses, it does not permit the user to send the attachment or download it.
The anti-virus scanning in Gmail cannot be turned off.
