Google is going to introduce a censored version of its service in China. The China service will restrict access to email, chat rooms and blogs.

Google will initially offer only its web and image search services, Google News and local search.

Google, in a statement, said: “Other products — such as Gmail and Blogger — will be introduced only when we are comfortable that we can do so in a way that strikes a proper balance among our commitments to satisfy users’ interests, expand access to information, and respond to local conditions.” [Source]

Google is also co-sponsoring StopBadware, org, a website aimed at controlling spyware and other malware.

The project is led by Harvard’s Berkman Center and the Oxford Internet Institute. The project will evaluate downloadable applications independently, publish objective information and provide a web-based way for users to describe problems that they come across.
