The Internet is the biggest source of consumer complaints in New York, according to Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer’s office received 7,723 complaints about the Internet in 2005, a 28% increase compared to 2004.
Complaints about the Internet accounted for 15% more than 51,000 written complaints received by the office in 2005.
Spitzer’s office received 6,164 complaints for credit and debt problems and identity theft, and 5,514 related to automobiles.
Spitzer said: “Typical Web-related complaints involved non-delivery of goods, incorrect charges for shipped goods, auctions, computer spyware and spam.” [Source]
In 2004, Spitzer’s office received 6,013 complaints related to the Internet. Credit and banking generated 6,274 complaints, followed by 6,255 complaints related to automobiles.
Spitzer announced the statistics as part of National Consumer Protection Week.
