39 million homes in the US are without internet access, according to a survey by Park Associates. They predict that the growth in overall internet penetration will increase from 63% to 64% by the end of 2006.
The study also revealed that 8 million homes out of the 39 million owned a computer. Two million offline homes are planning to get internet services in 2006. 300,000 homes said they might subscribe if they are offered cheaper services.
14 million households do not have Internet access at home but access the web at work or other locations, including libraries and internet cafes.
John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates, said: “We are clearly facing a problem of demand, not supply. Computers and Internet service have never been cheaper, yet many households still show little enthusiasm for the technology.” [Source]
31% of households, among those that will not subscribe at all, said having access at work is sufficient. 18% said “I am not interested in anything on the Internet”. 39% fell into the “other” category.
Barrett said: “We present them with several possible reasons, and their response is typically “˜none of the above'” [Source]
