Online searches increased 39% to 5.7 billion in Jan 2006, compared to 4.9 billion in Jan 2005, according to a study by Nielson/NetRatings. According to them, this is the largest number of online searches to date.

The number of online searches increased 12% in Jan 2006, compared to Dec 2005.

Ken Cassar, Chief Analyst at Nielson/NetRatings, said: “Web users are conducting more searches not because they can’t find what they’re looking for, but because search as a utility has become deeply ingrained into people’s everyday lives.” [Source]

Google Search had the highest search share rankings, with 48.2% in Jan 2006. This is a 1.1% increase compared to 47.1% in Jan 2005.

Yahoo Search was second in the list, with 22.2% compared to 21.2% in Jan 2005. MSN Search was third with 11.0% compared to 12.8% in Jan 2005.
