51% of American internet users make purchases from opt-in emails, according to a survey by Lyris Technologies. 44% make purchases from online ads.

The survey also revealed that 10% of the respondents purchase from opt-in emails a few times a month. 6% purchase from online ads at the same frequency.

Dave Dabbah, Director of Sales and Marketing at Lyris, said: “These poll results underscore the growing importance of the internet as a sales channel. For most companies, the best marketing strategy employs a well-balanced mix of targeted email campaigns and targeted online ads. Both vehicles are proving to be highly effective at converting readers into buyers.” [Source]

The survey also revealed that there is a 0.7% probability that the internet users who make purchases from opt-in emails are likely to make purchases from online ads. There is a 0.82% probability that those who purchase from online ads are likely to purchase from opt-in commercial emails.

26% of American internet users received opt-in commercial emails via Yahoo, 21% via hotmail and 13% via AOL. 8% users received opt-in commercial emails through their work email accounts.

David Dabbah said: “What’s most interesting about these results is that fewer American consumers are using work email accounts as the delivery vehicle for opt-in commercial emails. This trend could be driven by factors such as rapid adoption of high-speed internet access at home and increasing consumer comfort in managing multiple email accounts, each serving a different purpose.” [Source]

According to the survey, 30% of American internet users had one email account, 37% had two accounts, 19% had three accounts and 13% had four or more email accounts.
