There are 39 million homes in the US without internet access. Among these homes, 8 million have a computer in the house.
According to the report, 42% of the respondents currently subscribe to broadband internet at home. 4% currently own narrowband and plan to upgrade to broadband. 18% own narrowband but do not intend to upgrade to broadband connections. 29% do not own a computer at home.
The study found that 2 million households are planning to get internet access at home in 2006. 300,000 households might subscribe if offered cheaper services. 14 million households do not have internet access at home but access the internet at work and other locations.
John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates, said: “We are clearly facing a problem of demand, not supply. Computers and Internet service have never been cheaper, yet many households still show little enthusiasm for the technology.” [Source]
According to Park Associates, there were varied reasons for households not subscribing to internet access at home. 31% said they were content with accessing the internet from work. 18% said they were not interested in anything on the internet, and 39% chose “other reasons” for not subscribing to the internet at home.
