80% of UK businesses have a website, according to the Information Security Breaches Survey by PriceWaterHouseCoopers for the UK Department of Trade and Industry. 70% of the websites accept online orders.

13% of these websites make financial transactions online. Most of these businesses used a payment service provider.

When asked about the importance of protecting customer information as a driver of security expenditure, 74% of large businesses said it was “very important”. 22% said it was “important”, 19% said it was “not very important” and 19% said it was “not important at all”.

Among small businesses, when asked the same question, 63% said it was “very important”, 28% said it was “important”, 4% said it was “not very important” and 2% said it was “not important at all”.

Among the UK business networks, 12% saw significant attempts to break into the network. 2% saw successful penetration of the network. 5% faced denial of service attacks, and 2% saw attacks on telecommunications or internet traffic.

The survey also revealed that overall 8% of UK businesses currently use VOIP and 14% are planning to implement VOIP in the next year.

Among large businesses, 31% currently use VOIP and 20% are planning to implement VOIP in the next year.
