The US is responsible for 23.1% of all spam in the first quarter of 2006, according to a report by Sophos. China is responsible for 21.9% and South Korea for 9.8%.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said: “Two years ago, the US accounted for over half of all spam sent to the world – now it is less than a quarter, evidence which confirms that more Americans are waking up to the need to protect their home computers from malicious hackers.
More and more viruses, worms and Trojan horses are being designed to take over innocent users’ computers with the intention of stealing information and sending out junk email campaigns.” [Source]
Other countries in the top 12 spam relaying countries list are France (4.3%), Poland (3.8%), Spain (3.3%), Germany (3%), Brazil (2.9%), Japan (2%), UK (1.9%), Netherlands (1.8%) and Taiwan (1.6%).
Among the list for spam relaying by continent, Asia was responsible for 42.8% of all spam, North America for 25.6% and Europe for 25%. Other countries in the list were South America (5.1%), Australasia (0.8%) and Africa (0.6%).
Cluley said: “Europe is in danger of overtaking North America as the second worst spam-relaying part of the world. This continental shift is inevitable because as North America’s percentage continues to fall, the rest of the world is witnessing a rise. It’s imperative that computer users worldwide put better defences in place to prevent their computers from being converted into spam-spewing zombies.” [Source]
