Bounce messages comprise 11% of all spam, virus and phishing emails, according to a study by IronPort Systems. 5% of bounce messages make it through the end-users.

The cost on bounce messaging concerning IT help desks totaled over US $5 billion per year. 50% of Fortune 500 companies have faced problems with email delivery or delays due to bounce messages targeting their networks.

A bounce message is an email which informs the sender that their email was not delivered to the recipient. Some of these emails are sent to recipients who have never heard of the address the email is sent to. According to IronPort, these mails are misdirected bounces, used by criminals as spam, phishing and spyware.
