Rick Butts is restoring his sites ‘Press Release Monkey’ and ‘Marketing Product Review’, which were attcked by hackers.
According to Butts, three dedicated servers were attacked and the attacker left ‘backdoor’ code in the SSH area so as to access the server after it was brought back online.
Butts says in the press statement, “Now I know that The Planet does NOT automatically backup client data. You need to check and verify that you are getting an off site backup – because one of the ways some companies back up your data is to a 2nd hard drive, on YOUR OWN server.
If your server goes down – you lost both – just as if your house burnt down with your backup disks in it. I had to do an OS reload and wipe 2 of the servers clean – losing valuable data.
The up-side of this is that, after the shock wore off, I’ve had a chance to start some things over and to change some things. It’s like Brian Tracy’s ‘zero-based thinking’ where you analyze your situation from scratch.
Anyone who has sites hosted online should back up their valuable data. This includes blog posts, software files and plugins, and images etc., to a remote location (this could be your own computer – which IS offsite to your server) and do it TODAY!”. [PR Submitted to IMNewswatch]
