Do you Really Need all Those Backlinks?

My short answer is … Nope!

I have been doing some pretty intense research over the last few weeks to see if a properly organized (siloed / structured) site coupled with content that uses LSI centric keywords rather than “keyword density” carries ranking power above competing sites that don’t use this strategy and have a high number of backlinks (sites linking to their site).

I have dispelled a pretty heavy myth that the main focus after on-page optimization is to gain as many backlinks as possible.

The evidence shows that the main strategy to gain high rankings is to rank highly for “long-tail” keywords within a structured site. The more long-tail keywords you rank for within your theme, the more highly you rank for broader keywords.

For those of you that don’t know what a long-tail keyword is… Here’s a short breakdown:

If you want to rank for a highly competitive keyword like “cell phones” (broad term) then you need to first gain rankings for long-tail terms like “Motorla Razr V3i cell phone in Atlanta”. It is very easy to rank “high” for the long tail, low competition keywords. It can be done in days or weeks depending on the PR of your site.

Repeat this process (going for the long-tails) over and over again and you will find yourself ranking higher and higer for the broad keyword at the top of your silo “cell phones”. This appears to be happening all over the place.

If you are unfamiliar with what a silo is or if you want to see some video evidence of ehat I’m talking about then you will want to read my new free report called “The Master Plan Primer”. This is an eye opening read to say the least. Evidence is showing that the number one strategy after on page optimization (using the silo site structure method) is the number one game plan to rise in the ranks.

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. If the search engines see that you rank for other keywords (in the cell phones niche for example) then they will trust that you know what you’re talking about and will rank you higher and higher based on how many long-tail terms you rank high for…. Hmm interesting.
