Yes… AdSense is Alive… But Hold Your Horses!

Question: Hey Michael, today I received an email that said, “Google’s revenue almost DOUBLED from the 3rd quarter last year. This is HUGE! And the cut paid to AdSense publishers for this very same term? Are you sitting down? $1.87 Billion.”

What do you think about that? Do you still stick by your guns, that Google shouldn’t be your primary revenue source.

Answer: Not sure where they got that number. Sounds like wishful thinking to me. The real figure paid out to people on the AdSense network is more like only 44% of that number.

The official Google Third Quarter Earnings press release is here:

http://www.google.com/press/pressrel/revenues_q306.html

Scroll down to the part where they talk about, TAC – Traffic Acquisition Costs. “TAC is the portion of revenues shared with Google’s partners. The majority of TAC expense is related to amounts ultimately paid to our AdSense partners, which totaled $780 million in the third quarter of 2006.”

So you can see the official number is much less than you were led to believe. Even $780 million is no biggie. Take some math to it, like 34% of all web sites have AdSense ads on them. Divide that total by the payout and it’s like $650 per year, or $54 per month, per web site.

Now it’s late, and I’m tired, and I may have screwed up the math… but I don’t know anyone that’s getting rich, or going to retire on $54 a month. And remember, that’s just the average. Sites like Godaddy are probably making millions from their parked domains, while granny’s sausage site is making a pittance.

So yes, I stick by my guns. I do have AdSense sites and they do OK. I set up some top level categories like “Health and Fitness” and started adding modified PLR articles to them. The bigger they get, the more they make.

I do not, however, link them into any of my mininets or affiliate sites. They are totally separate. And for those of you keeping score at home, my affiliate sites out perform my AdSense sites four to one.

If you’d like to increase your AdSense income be sure to frequent Google’s official AdSense blog..

Right now they’re running some tips on where to put the ads to maximize revenues.

Another way to maximize your clicks, is to use graphical elements. Jay Young’s AdSense backgrounds have been tested and increase the amount of clicks. They’re also fun to use and add more value to any web page.

Finally, you can also get a lot of tips from the AdSense Help Center. Look over on the right and scroll down to the AdSense Resources section. Look for the “Optimization Tips” link. They’ve got a whole whack of tricks to earn more money, while staying inside their terms of service. (Way more than some recent ebooks I might add. 😉

So yes, AdSense is alive… but it has matured and it’s not the “wild west” it once was. So instead of “sticking to guns” how about we put them away and put AdSense in it’s place… which in my mind, at least for now, is a third or fourth – yet still important – ancillary revenue stream.
