Website Templates are Like Cake Mix
Comment: “Let me start by saying, I have all your stuff and Revenge of the Mininet really opened up my eyes a couple of years ago. I also want to tell you that those were great tips in issues 101 and 104 for modifying templates.
Just a comment on IMS #104 though, if you are going to take the time to modify templates so heavily, you are probably better off to build your own sites from scratch. This will ensure uniqueness. ~ Don”
Response: Hello Don. Thanks for the kind words. Glad I could “open your eyes.” Hopefully your awareness and perception showed a sense of wonder when you first saw all the linking diagrams in Revenge.
Yes, it’s always better to create your own websites from scratch. But templates exist for the same reason as cake mix. Not everyone can bake a cake. Either they can’t follow a recipe, don’t have the time, or just want something that looks and tastes half decent for their effort.
Earlier this year when Michael Cheney came out with his AdSense videos, they revolutionized how everyone placed the adverts on their sites. I emulated his layouts – without copying them – and my AdSense clicks went up 372% and my revenues went up 283% in less than a week.

So sometimes, a template can be used as an idea generator. It can jump-start the design and production process. All you need to do is start typing into the HTML page and replace the elements with your own.
As soon as you put your site up, Google looks at your Partner ID. It then checks your other sites. The trouble starts if you have several sites looking like they came from a cookie cutter.
I chose to tell people how to modify their templates, because I know that not everyone is a designer, or good at the computer, making graphics and sizing photos for the web. If they can make their own site from scratch, great. But if not, and they need to start the design process from a template, then that’s ok too.
The important thing is to encourage everyone to take action. To stop worrying if what they do is good enough. Just get something up. Do the best you can with what you have.
Then once you have your first website up, go on to the next. Make each one as unique as you are capable of, and know what? You’ll do ok.
Now if everyone would just download a copy of SeaMonkey and start poking at it, they’d find that HMTL isn’t scary at all. You don’t even have to look at the code, or know how to program.
Just start typing on the page and dragging in graphics, just like a word processor. It’s that simple. Then when you “Save” the page, it automatically generates the HTML for you.
Sorry Don, I didn’t mean to ramble on for so long. If people need to use templates, I say go ahead and use the training wheels. But when you’re big enough to try riding the bike, download SeaMonkey and start poking and playing with it… it’s just software for crying out loud… it doesn’t have feelings.
Then one day, before you know it… you’ll be modifying templates with ease. Even creating your own sites from scratch. And all it took was a little playing around with software. Thanks for the poke in the mind Don.
