Blog Marketing 101

Internet marketing is now as commonplace as the old newspaper ad. It is the way to draw customers to your business, whether that is solely online or based in a brick and mortar store front. But with all the myriad ways to market your site and attract the kind of traffic you need to turn a profit, there is an emerging trend in internet marketing that allows businesses to essentially draw customers with little or no out of pocket expense.

Blogs are the new method that allows you to speak directly to your consumer base about specific issues that affect them and their buying habits. These fast growing website services are taking over the information sector of the internet. Internet giants like Yahoo are linking to them. When you pull up the news summary service provided by Yahoo, you will not only get information from the major media outlets online, but you will also get the latest stories from bloggers all over the internet universe. This is essentially due to the free nature of blogs. Why pay the New York Times for an article you can read about for free on an economist’s blog?

So with this amazing growth potential and the links to other websites that you have been paying for in the past, why not start a blog of your very own? Pay per click ads cost you money. SEO (search engine optimization) content is limited in its ability to keep up with the changing keyword rules among various search engines. But a blog taps into the minds of the very people you are hoping to attract.

Blog is short for “Web Log.” It is an online journal that is made public by posing on the internet. Other users can see not only the post you make today, but can access archives of previous posts. And if users can do this, so can search engines. This is one of the biggest advantages of blogs: they stay around for a long long time. Those comments you posted sharing your expertise on your specialty will come up from now until the end of the internet when someone searches for the right keywords.

This search feature leads to linking. It means that the more people view your blog, the more people will link to it, using your article or commentary or journal entry as an entry on their own website. With every link to your blog, you site’s ranking increases on the internet. This means that it will come up more and more often when people are searching for what you have to offer.

So when thinking about your next internet marketing strategy, try brainstorming on an effective blog. Try a very specific topic that will lead people to your product or service. Start writing on a regular basis. The more entries you have, the more page views your blog will get, and the more links it will end up garnering. Once your blog is up and running, simply sit back and wait for the page ranking to slowly grow. This is not a get rich quick marketing scheme, but it is one that has long term payoffs for little investment.
