Are You a Freebie Addict?
As someone whose expertise is in creating eBooks, I often have to focus on what portion of facts will be in the product compared to what I’ll leave out for the freebie bonus items.
As marketers and online consumers, we’ve been trained to value and expect the freebies. In fact, if an offer comes along without one, we sometimes scoff – as if it’s our personal right to get something for nothing.
Freebies are a fun addition to information products. I don’t mind supplying them, as long as my products are complete. I often turn my rants into freebie reports, like my Intimidation Marketing freebie I sent out virally (most of you have this, but there are always new people joining the list).
Ironically, you can download it free here: http://clicks.aweber.com/z/ct/?Agce9yiCWxHzowhZ0vX.fg
But if you get addicted to the freebie mindset, you might hinder your business growth. Price points for products are a hot topic of debate in forums about ‘net marketing, but nobody argues about freebies.
No one is going to reveal everything for free, period. You might get a few great nuggets of advice here and there, but to advance your online business, you sometimes have to pay for the knowledge.
Consider it this way…would you open a franchise for a new offline business without paying for the knowledge of how to run it? You pay for your college education, standard operating procedures on how to run the franchise, training from the corporate office, and more.
Why is your online business any different? Let me ask you this: If you did open a franchise offline, would you want to model your own efforts for someone highly successful, or teetering on the brink of closing? Just because you don’t have to funnel a ton of money into your online set-up (compared to an offline company), it doesn’t mean you should neglect your investment of training and education.
In fact, some offline businesses never have a chance in hell of achieving the same profit margins that an online business enjoys. Your investments of training and learning should reflect what you hope to get out of it. If you want to make a few spare dollars here and there, then freebie materials might suit you just fine.
But a business? Be willing to whip out your wallet once in awhile and more importantly, take time to evaluate your purchases.
I see too many people swallowing up info products like addicts. Watch your spending so that you don’t buy too much “crap” and then swear off of spending another dime when you realize how much you’ve wasted.
I hope you think about this “lecture” the next time you land on a page and roll your eyes at the price point – OR you buy something on a whim without careful consideration. Pretend like you’re just the buyer for your business, not the boss – if you could explain the purchase as a wise investment, get it!
Hope you have a great weekend! Tiff 🙂
