Your Name In Lights!
According to a recent CNN report, Conan O’Brian, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert got into a “mock battle” Monday evening, February 4. The “fight” carried over to each of the late-night comedians’ respective TV shows, with each of them breaking in on each other during the evening.
According to the report, the whole thing started “weeks ago,” when O’Brien claimed credit for a bump in Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s poll numbers and results from early primaries. Stewart and Colbert apparently didn’t agree. Each of them claimed appearances on THEIR shows “made Huckabee.”
And the battle began.
Each of the comedians showed up on the other’s programs, calling each other out and “battling” on the air.
It all ended in an all-out rumble where all three talk show hosts apparently knocked each other unconscious. Then, Huckabee himself, appearing by satellite, declared, “Let’s be clear: None of these guys made me. This great nation made me. So, vote for me. God bless America and forget these three idiots.”
I hope you realize this was much more than some great impromptu comedy moment. It was also a perfect example of teaming up with “competitors” and tying an “event” to current news.
And it accomplished more than one goal.
First, of course – all three shows made national news. This is NEVER a bad thing. I’m sure that was the plan all along. Tie the “mock battle” to a presidential candidate on the evening leading into the “Super Tuesday” primary elections, and you have a good chance of being included in the day’s election coverage.
It also ate up a lot of MINUTES on all three shows, at a time when the writers for these shows are all still out on strike and the comedians are struggling nightly to keep things funny and entertaining.
Huckabee’s participation was anything but stupid. His appearance once again showcased his well-noted sense of humor and enabled him to send a great subtle campaign message on the night before “Super Tuesday” on THREE shows, all with fairly strong loyal audiences.
Talk about a win/win/win/win!
Think about how YOU could apply this to YOUR business and use it to build interest, get attention and even possibly make headlines of your own in the media.
The power of tying promotions to current hot news events is proven. News events you can tie to are almost unlimited, bound only by your imagination. There are general trends, financial news, the upcoming presidential elections, world events – even major entertainment news.
Marketing expert Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, for example, tied a promotion he put together to the “Leave Britney Alone” YouTube video that got so much attention a few months back that the video hit the major news outlets. Mike mocked that video with his own, complete with crying on-camera, holding a towel up behind him as a backdrop. Interestingly, Mike made the video just to introduce a new promotion he was launching to his affiliates – but it got spread all over the Internet because it was a: outrageously funny and b: it was tied to something in the news we were all familiar with.
This stuff REALLY works and can result in hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of dollars’ worth of promotion at no cost.
The ONLY challenge lies within the fact that the news itself is a fleeting beast. By the time you see most hot news items hitting the press, they’re already in the process of dying. How on earth do you put something together to tie into a hot, breaking news item when, sometimes, you might only have 24 hours to react and it can easily take longer than that to put something worthwhile together?
This isn’t hard, but it does require a bit of pre-planning. Here’s what I suggest you do:
Look through all the keywords you currently use in your business. Especially focus on the long-tail keywords used on your blogs, sales Websites and other ongoing promotions.
When researching keywords to use in your business, you should always try to “expand the horizon” a bit and find RELATED keywords that genuine prospects for what you sell would also use to find answers to their problems.
If you don’t already have an extensive list of these keywords, now would be a good time to expand your list.
EXAMPLE:
Assume you sell sporting goods. Standard first-to-mind eywords might include: basketball, exercise, workout gear, sports, sports equipment, walking shoes, softball, baseball, baseball equipment, etc.
Long-tail keywords might include: walking to lose weight, better heart health through exercise, easy exercise routines at home, staying thin and trim with exercise.
These long-tail keywords are also “flags” for news items you want to watch for. Try to create some specific press releases, promotional specials, E-books, audio programs or other promotional materials that you can have ready to release the MOMENT you see a hot news item related to each of the long-tail keywords you’ve pegged.
Then – when any news hits about nationwide obesity, heart disease among adults, or other related stories, YOU hit the news with a followup RELATED press release. Or, contact media people on your list with your RELATED story and offer to be interviewed as an expert, commenting on the story.
With videos, you could also launch a YouTube video the day any related news items hit the press.
I hope you see the picture here.
What you put together and have waiting in the wings can match several potential news stories. It can include a “fake fight” or “event” of some kind that you’re ready to roll with.
Whatever you put together, just be sure it’s ready to roll when related news hits and you can capitalize on that news before your competitors have time to start putting something together and dominate the conversation while it’s still ongoing and actively drawing attention.
OK. Last week, I promised you two gifts. I promise not to let you down.

There is no cost or obligation to grab this report – they provide it as a public service to help their clients and I highly recommend you go to the above address, print out the online report, study it, then file it away with your most important papers. It’s excellent stuff – short and fact-filled.
Next – speaking of short and fact-filled – I’d like to provide you with access to something really, truly unique, brand new and spectacular. It’s called Profit Snapshots and it features short, concise 10-minute interviews with 24 leading experts in business and money-making.
In each of these interviews, the chosen experts reveal their number one most powerful money-making secrets that they NEVER talk about publicly.
The program is unique because the interviewers truly managed to pull secrets from these experts that they never usually reveal to anyone – not even their closest clients. I’ve listened to all the interviews and there are secrets that, generally, the experts use themselves.
Now you get to hear them, too.
And – since each interview is only 10 minutes in length, you won’t waste your entire day listening through hours of “fluff” and “hype,” because there is none. There simply wasn’t time to do more than cut to the chase, pull the hottest tip out, then move on.
I’ll see you next week!
