Adwords: Writing Titles and Descriptions that Sizzle

If you want to win at the Adwords game you have to be able to write effective ads. Since you only have a very small amount of space in which to create your ad, you must get your message to your audience powerfully and quickly in order to capture their attention and get that valued click-thru.

Put yourself in the viewers position when you write your ad. Think about the reasons why a searcher would want to learn more about your offer: What are the benefits of your offer? There are essentially three major reasons why people decide to buy something. These are:

1. To fulfill a need

2. To solve a problem or fear

3. To improve their self-image.

Your Title and your description should be able to state what product or service is being offered, what need your product or service fills, the problem your product or service solves, or the benefit your product and service brings. Without these things your ad will not be nearly as compelling as some of your competitors.

You must focus on the needs of your audience. This is the central them to any type of advertising success. This may seem contrary, but your initial goal should not be to make a sale. Your first assignment is to convince your prospective viewer to take that first very small baby step to making a purchase from you. You want to create a landing page that is as compelling as your ad title and description are. Make sure that you include a sign up form on your landing page so that your prospect can take the next step and request more information from you about your product or service. Once you have their name and email address you have them in your funnel. Now future contacts may be initiated by you. This is without a doubt one of the most important steps in the sales cycle.

Maximize your keyword usage. Using targeted keywords will bring more high quality viewers who are looking for what it is you are offering. This is so important, because if you reach the wrong audience you will pay for it in a higher cost per click and fewer conversions. Make use of a quality keyword list to help you maintain a higher ad position. Do you need to be number 1? It’s nice, but let me tell you 2 and 3 aren’t bad either. If you have an attention grabbing headline, a good description, and a high ad position all combined together, you will definitely see more click-thrus on your campaign.

Advertising is similar across all mediums. Your title and keywords must issue a strong call to action. You want to create a sense of urgency with your ad. One of the best ways to do this is to have a “limited-time” offer. Why? Because this gives your prospect a reason to click right now. Why allow them to put off until later what you want them to do now. Some other good ideas to create urgency are to offer a sale price until a certain date, or make a valuable offer of something free to the first 150 people who respond to your offer.

If after a short time your ads are not receiving the number of clicks, then you need to try to rewrite your ad. Providing different information this time. If your price is an advantage you have over your competitors, use it in your title or description. Use words that grab attention. Words such as “download”, “free”, or “trial”, but don’t lie. Use these power words only if they are appropriate. Just using words to try to increase your impressions will inevitably backfire for you as an advertiser, it will result in a greater cost per click and a lower click thru rate.

Remember to stay focused on your Adwords campaigns. Emphasize the advantage of the product or service in your title and description. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to try new ways to create an effective Adwords strategy.
