Affiliate Marketers: Build a List to Build Your Business

If you have been online for any length of time at all you have undoubtedly heard that “the money is in the list”. It’s 100% true. Most first time visitors to your website are probably not going to make a purchase from you. Most people don’t sit down at their computer looking to buy anything. They are looking for information. They may be intrigued by what you have to offer, but they will probably think it over before they whip out their credit card and make a purchase. It has been said over and over that you will need to make several contacts with a prospect before they are comfortable enough to make the decision to actually purchase something from you. By having the ability to build yourself a list of potential prospects to market to, you are definitely improving your chances to make affiliate sales.

You should treat the members of your email list like gold. By creating a list of subscribers you now have the ability to send emails to a few dozen, a couple of hundred, or even a few thousand people with your product promotions. Imagine sitting back and watching your sales roll in because you have taken the time and made the effort to build a targeted list of subscribers.

The one thing that most affiliates don’t get is this. It’s NOT just all about building a list. It’s about taking the time to develop a relationship with the subscribers on your list. If you don’t email your list for weeks at a time and then out of the clear blue you send them a promotional email pitch the chances are pretty good that you will get more “unsubscribes” than you can shake a stick at. I would bet that you would get far more “unsubscribes” than you will get sales. Not a good thing at all.

Building a strong rapport and a trusting relationship with your subscribers is not going to happen overnight. You are going to have to put in time and effort. You will soon discover that you have the right balance with your subscribers and all your efforts will be rewarded many times over. You should try to send out at least one email every single week. If you go any longer than a week your subscribers will soon forget who you are. Your emails should be a blend of information and promotions. You don’t have to promote a product every time you contact your list. Provide your subscribers with value. Things like articles, tips, tricks, case studies, and reviews that will help them. By doing this you are nurturing your subscribers. They will grow to trust you and be more likely to make purchases from you because you have put forth an effort to create a relationship with them.

Those are the reasons you want to create a list, but how do you go about starting your list building campaign? I would like to offer you a few suggestions:

1. Create a Free Special Report or Ecourse. Make it unique to you. Make it something of value. Don’t give the same tired reports and e-books that can be found other places. You are asking for something of value from your subscriber. In return for their valuable email address you should give them something of equal or greater value.

2. Create a dedicated web page for your newsletter subscribers. SPAM is a terrible thing. It’s become extremely hard to convince people to provide you with their email address. Even if you are giving that Free Report to your subscribers you are going to have to sell your prospective subscribers on why they should give up their email address for your free offer. Your subscriber opt in page doesn’t need to be elaborate. Simply explain what the benefits will be for those who do subscribe to your email list.

I highly suggest that you promote your newsletter through articles. Start writing and distributing quality articles to the articles directories. I have used many article directories in the past, but I get the most response from ezinearticles.com. Make sure you include a compelling author bio and a link back to your newsletter subscription page. If you can write quality articles that piques the curiosity of your readers, then you will increase the chances that those people will want to click on your bio link and find out more about what you have to offer them.

I hope these tips will prove helpful to you in building your own list. Building a list of responsive targeted subscribers is one of the best ways you can build your affiliate marketing business for the long haul.
