Bartering for Your Affiliate Exposure

Bartering was around long before the use of currency. Before we started using money, the only real way to get what you wanted was to trade for it. The art of bartering may be ancient, but it’s certainly not dead – especially on the World Wide Web!

Bartering is actually very much alive and well today. Craigslist and other websites have very active bartering sections, and there are bartering clubs all over the world. Some bartering clubs have hundreds or even thousands of members.

Why not apply the power of bartering to your affiliate business? You can get just about anything you want without spending money if you have something valuable to trade for it. By valuable, I don’t necessarily mean products or hard goods. You can trade services for services, too.

What if you’re a great writer, and you’re promoting a really great product, but your graphics skills are severely lacking and you’d like to have some banner ads to help rake in affiliate cash? Try bartering for your banner design or squeeze page graphics. You could offer a designer a percentage of your earnings or custom writing work, in exchange for the design.

The reverse also holds true – use your graphic skills to trade for written work with freelance writers. It’s very rare to find someone who holds both of these talents, but online marketers usually possess one or the other, so see what you can do and offer it in exchange for what you need.

Using bartering is a really good way to get started if you have limited resources. If you don’t have the money for things like hosting and ghostwriting services, you can trade with those service providers.

It’s also a very good way for established marketers to reduce their costs. Even if you can afford to have designs made, why not try to find a designer who would be willing to trade their services for a one-time percentage of profits when you blast your list for a particular affiliate item – or, drum up business for the provider by giving him word of mouth referrals or traffic from your marketing list.

Maybe you could offer a designer an ad in your newsletter? If you have several gurus on your list, this could be a very lucrative proposal for a designer. Bartering should be something you consider every time you have a task that needs to be done.

Remember, if you don’t have a product to trade, you can easily trade services. On the other hand, if you feel your time is worth more than the cost of the service, you could just trade copies of a product you own (not one that’s owned by another product creator) for the services you need. The great thing about bartering is that both parties win!
