How To ENJOY The News
The news isn’t pretty these days. It all looks like doom and gloom. No hope. Everything’s going to hell in a handbasket.
The most common advice given to entrepreneurs and self-starters like you and me is to ignore the news. Turn on something else. Pop in a motivational CD instead.
It’s true you can’t let the news get to you. But – hasn’t the news always leaned toward the negative? Hasn’t it forever focused on tragedy and mishap and upheaval around the world?
Why?
Because the news focuses on what’s unusual. It’s a business and, as such, it’s all about getting more readers and higher ratings. This is a lot more difficult if you start reporting good news when good news abounds around us all the time and isn’t unusual enough to pull us in like the scandals and misdeeds the news usually focuses on instead.
In spite of everything, the fact that the news today seems very bad is a good thing. It means what they’re reporting is still unusual.
I going to suggest you start paying more attention to the news – at least more than you do right now. And in a different way.
You’ve got to detach yourself emotionally to do this. Step out of your own body and occupy the body and mind of your primary prospect for whatever it is you have to sell as you study the news. TAKE NOTES. Note how each occurance reported in the news would make you feel if you were your prospect. What would it make you think? What conversation would it start in your own mind?
Study all sides of the news – don’t just tune in to the channel or Website or paper that says what you like to hear most. You want differing views because your prospects have differing views, too.
Here’s a great source for a quick overview of the news from ALL sides (because they digest all the commentary from around the world on each story):
The Week (http://www.theweek.com)
They’re online. They even have a daily email alert. I suggest you subscribe to the printed magazine. It’s weekly. It’s concise. It provides all points of view to most every important story that happened the past week. And it’s not overly expensive.
Also look on the leading news Websites for blogs that allow their readers and viewers comment on the news. These comments – again from all sides – will really let you peer into the hearts and minds of the people you most likely want to sell to.
Turning off the news and ignoring it might help you feel better but, if your prospects and customers aren’t doing the same thing, you’re still battling an uphill battle when you try to enter the conversation that’s going on in their minds on a day-to-day basis.
Consider it MARKET RESEARCH. Don’t let it affect you. Deal with it in small doses. Make sure you check out all sides of every story. Take notes. You’ll have the clues, constantly updated, to the perfect products you should be selling and the exact most precise message you should be using to sell them, no matter what’s happening in the news at any given time.
This will enable you to re-examine your sales messages – on your Website, in your ads, in your direct mail or wherever they reside – and adjust them to stay in constant flow with the conversation in the minds of your prospects.
It also makes it easy to find additional products and services you can offer that play directly into the thinking of your prospects at any given time.
Sure – start your day with a motivational CD. Tune away from the news when you’re driving around throughout the day. Just plan to spend at least 30 minutes watching or reading the news each day, pen in hand, coldly noting the effect of each story you see, and you’ll not only stay up on the game, you’ll stay ahead of the game.
I’ll see you next week!
