How to Get Paid More than Last Year
Earl Nightingale said it best on one of his old recordings from the 1950’s,”You get paid by bringing value to the marketplace.”
So how do you increase your value? There are three immediate ways.
Improve or innovate your existing product. Create a new product to satisfy a hungry market. Increase or improve your personal value.
When you learn more you can charge more for your services. When you can provide clients, or your boss, with new and valuable information, they’ll pay a premium to learn, or benefit from what you know.
So far this year, I’ve read 7 books and listened to 8 more, for a total of 15.Right now I’m rereading some of the early direct marketing classics by Caples, Bird, Ogilvy and Hopkins.
My ears are feasting. My brain is growing. I’m increasing my personal value every day.
I don’t say this to impress you, but to impress upon you, that self improvement is the easiest way to get paid more than you did last year. By increasing your knowledge, and personal value, you can charge more for your services.
For example, back when I was in the printing business, every time I learned a new skill, I asked for a raise.I mastered skills like trapping, color correction, dot gain, scanning, and added it to my graphic design and advertising background.
Like clockwork, every three months I asked for a raise and got it. When I left, I was earning 75K per year. Not bad considering it was 1996.
Do you want to get paid more than last year? Then increase the value you bring to the marketplace. Learn more… earn more… it’s as simple as that.

Jobs in a Recession
If you want someone to give you a job in a recession, that’s the wrong frame of mind. Why should a company “give” you something like a job when you haven’t offered anything of value to them first?
Do some research on the companies you apply to. Find out what challenges they face. Research and plan how you can help them make more sales and achieve higher profits. Have ideas of value to offer them, before expecting anything in return from them.
March in there and tell them, “I want to work here. I’m not here to fill out an application. I want a job.”
“I’m here to help you advertise, promote and build your business. I’m here to help you get more sales, produce more product and achieve higher profits.
I’ve done some research in your market and have some ideas that will help you do just that.” (This approach also works if you need more clients.)
You will get a job quickly when you behave in this manner. Not just for bringing them value, but because of your boldness.
Then if you want to keep your job, or clients, when times get tough, you must start working on your reputation right away. Work on it daily. Keep it shiny.
If you always give “a little more” than what was expected of you, you’ll keep your job longer than those who only do “just enough.”
