The Information Marketer as Inventor
There was an account of a gentleman in my home town who was rather eccentric. He was a widowed farmer and a heavy drinker, had little to do with his kids, and was missing a front tooth and the tip of his left ring finger. I never did meet the man, but some very reliable sources gave me an account of something that happened to him just before he died.
He was one of those farmers who visited the local dump from time to time and often wound up bringing half of it home with him. As you can well imagine, his yard was cluttered with rusty and decaying objects. But, a few years ago, he began taking the junk and making “artwork” out of it. Over time, he created small figurines made from springs and car pistons, giant insects and spiders made from pipes, and even furniture out of car and laundry machine parts. He put them around his yard and home and eventually some locals began purchasing his creations from him. By the time he died, his yard was
cleared and he was driving the “Cadillac” he had always wanted. Well, an old, rusty Cadillac he had his eyes on for years at the local dealership…but that’s another tale.
Quite a story, no? If it sounds a bit bizarre, well, I will apologize in advance as these sorts of characters are what truly make growing up in the country interesting. But the important lesson from this is that this man, who was seen as odd and even as a failure by some, acted on some innate curiosity within him and wound up a very respectable success story in the end. Like Edison, Newton, Tesla, or Picasso, this man acted on his best judgment to create something wholly unique. I am told he saw himself as an inventor, someone trying to create not just apalpable object, but also a world of his own.
This is a good attitude for you, the information marketer, to have. Seeing yourself as an inventor is a good way to come through any anxiety, trepidation, or unsuccessful period you may be going through. It can help generate new ideas and concepts that could really put you in the vanguard of something new in information marketing.
Now, when I say invention, I truly mean a new creation. If you think you have a new way of presenting your information content to the world, you should work it out. Newsletters, books, pamphlets, e-mails…you should always keep them in your repertoire. But, recently, a friend of mine who was a great illustrator put together a comic book for info marketing about furniture. He created the fictitious character of a carpenter named Jerry, who guides the reader through a process of restoring antique furniture. It was a huge success. Another friend some months back did a short downloadable video production about heating and cooling systems, which he sold online as a digital file. I have to tell you that it was one of the most informative and well-constructed things I had ever viewed in info marketing. It sold well, too.
If you have creative, inventive juices in you, information marketing is the forum to let them pour out. What you have to consider are these questions:
– What is your audience is interested in?
– How much is it going to cost?
– What format can you present your content in?
– How do you get it out into the public realm?
– Is it going to be potentially profitable?
Once you have answered these basic questions, go for it. I wish I could provide more direction, but that might actually inhibit you. It’s going to be your creation and, in the end, something you can show the world. Your unique touch is what will help attract customers and bring you success.
