Spring Cleaning Is for More Than Just Windows

Spring is in the air, and soon enough it will be on our calendars. I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of spring. I like it not only because it means we’re one step closer to summer, but also because it serves as the perfect time to get the various areas of my life in order. Around this time every year, I like to give my cars, my office, my businesses and my finances a good spring cleaning.

Spring is the best time for me to do this stuff, because I feel rejuvenated. The sunshine, longer days and buzz in the air motivates me to make sure I’m in good shape in the most important aspects of my life. Also, it gives me the time to prepare for the upcoming year and set myself up for continued success.

The first thing I like to do is come into my home office and sort out my finances. I take a look at where my money is going, how it’s coming in and make sure that I have a firm grasp on my cash flow. After I crunch the numbers, I come up with a budget to get me through the summer and the fall. A budget I’ll revisit again in January.

Furthermore, with tax season right around the corner, I also use this opportunity to get my receipts together, organized and ready to prepare my tax forms. Generally, I just throw my business-related expenses and other receipts I’ll get credit for in a shoebox. During my spring cleaning, I go through the shoebox, put the receipts together and get ready to copy and mail them to the IRS to justify my claims.

After I’ve put my personal finances in order, I look to my business. I set goals for the spring and summer and devise the various ways I can meet them. I know many of the people I work with will be planning vacations in the coming months, so I start thinking about the big issues I’ll need to address. That way, I can get the ball rolling and not miss out on any of my priorities when others head out of town.

It also gives me time to evaluate the first quarter of the year and see where the business has succeeded and where it needs a little bit of work. It helps me determine the moves I’ll need to make in the upcoming months.

Spring is all about freshening up and getting ready for the summer months. If you don’t already, take this time to get yourself in organized and establish a plan for the future.
