The Secret Power of Stories
It’s been drummed into our heads that sex sells. But that’s less than half the story. Sex gets attention and makes us excited, but it’s stories that sell.
It’s not enough for a used car salesman to tell you that his product has low mileage and is in good shape. He tells you a story about the car: “This baby was bought new by a little old lady who only used the car on Sunday mornings, to drive to church.”
Or look at this example: two stores on the same block are having a sale. One plasters its windows with signs screaming, “SALE!” The other does the same thing, but adds just one word to the sale sign. Let’s say you’re the one who adds the magic word…
Your sale is 100 times more successful!
Here’s how it happens…
Customers see the signs. They see both stores are having a sale — but wait. Your sign has an extra word. And that one word makes all the difference between ho-hum and wow.
What’s the magic word?
FIRE sale? CLOSEOUT sale? UNDER-CONSTRUCTION sale? MUST-RELOCATE sale? BIRTHDAY sale? Pick one, or make up your own reason for having a sale. Practically any word (reason) works, even off-the-wall “story lines” such as:
— Bailout Sale
— Emergency Sale
— Free-market Sale
— Lost-it-all-in-the-market Sale
— Gotta-unload Sale
— Keep-America-moving Sale
— Low-price-celebration Sale
I said practically any word works, right? Here are a few that might not:
— Death-in-the-family Sale
— Brutal-divorce-settlement Sale
— Inherited-nothing Sale
— Stuck-with-it Sale
Go on! Time you gave it a try yourself.
