Adrian Newman’s latest ‘e-Wealth Daily’ article:

Do You Have the Need to Succeed?

As human beings, we all have basic needs, such as food and shelter. Beyond that, we have the need for love, recognition, money and status. There is one additional need that many people seek, but only a few of us possess: success. As the saying goes, “Nothing succeeds like success.”

Success can take many forms. One can be successful in business, in the arts, at love, at raising a family, or just at surviving. But it seems that one universal craving we all have is the need to accumulate wealth, possessions and status. This need is the driving force behind much of the good and evil that has been created in our world. Not being one devoted to philosophy, but rather to providing guidance and information on matters related to business issues, it is success in the business sphere that I will discuss here.

Many of us ask ourselves the question, “How come so and so has been successful where I haven’t been?” The percentage of individuals achieving high levels of success in the business
world, versus those just getting by, is miniscule. Just think of how many “titans of industry” you can name, as opposed to the number of people in business who you know of that are barely getting by. Setting aside the part of the population that achieved its success status due to family inheritance and the like, I want you to look at what made the rest of society achieve success where so many others have failed.

The main ingredient in climbing the ladder of success is the inner need to succeed. It is not something that all of us are born with; rather something that we develop as we get older. It
manifests itself at an early age and it sets those individuals who possess it apart from the rest. We all remember the teacher’s pet, or the student who always had his or her nose in the books and never had any fun.

Well, those geeks started out a lot like Bill Allen, Sumner Redstone, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett did. They are the ones who possessed the need to succeed. This need overpowered their other needs for fun, relaxation or socialization, for example. They overcame the obstacles that
were in their way, and single-mindedly pursued the objective that, in the end, made them successful. Very few of us possess the ability to focus on some distant future goal and ignore the pain and potential failure of the here and now. Yet it is these very traits that make people successful in the long term. If we don’t have that innate inner need to succeed, failure will surely
follow.

If you possess that inner drive and steel-willed discipline to achieve success, then you can truly say that you will be able to satisfy your need for success. Remember that, at the end of the
day, “Success claims many parents, but failure is an orphan.”
