Extra! Extra! Your Success in Print
Believe it or not, there is a great way to get free advertising that could have your phone (or, as I call if for some businesses,”cash register”) ringing off the hook!
No matter where you live, whether it is a big urban center, suburb, or rural community, you can take advantage of an advertising secret that could pave the way to big-time success for your business.
What is this little-known secret? Well, there’s a good chance you’ve looked at one at least once this week — the newspaper.
Now, you may be asking me how I could possibly think that newspaper advertising is free. In some places, it’s hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars to run an ad. Well, I’m not talking about a traditional advertisement. What I’m talking about is having an article written about your business by one of the paper’s writers.
They do it all the time and it really works!
All you have to do is contact the local business, career or community news editor for the paper you’d like your article to run in. Send them an e-mail with a press release attached or an outline of your article idea. The secret is to make your announcement appear newsy and topical.
For example, if you operate a summer camp, use the angle that parents are looking for options about what to do with their kids this summer. Emphasize the ease for the parents and the activities and relationships that children will receive. The newsier, the better.
If the editor or writer declines your request, ask them what you can do to get in the paper and take the necessary steps.
A friend of mine who writes for a free daily newspaper told me that every time he writes an article for a small business, inquiries and sales jump noticeably. Whether or not you believe it, a sizeable percentage of the population still reads the paper and can have their interest piqued by interesting offers and opportunities. The article may even convince them that they need your product!
If you’ve got a tight advertising budget and could use some extra help, call your local paper and find out how to get your business featured in an upcoming article!
