ESPN Marketing Secrets You Can Use

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is underway and, for millions of people around the world, there is no sports event that is more exciting. Here in America, however, the World Cup is not the high profile event it is everywhere else. But that may change.

For years, the U.S. television carrier of the event, ESPN, has been investing lots of time and money into boosting the profile of the tournament, and soccer in general, in this country. So far, they’ve been successful in their efforts to promote the event, which is held every four years. This year, it’s being held in South Africa.

One of the ways they’ve been hyping up the event is by promoting Team USA’s first match against England. Years ago, the Americans upset the English team at the World Cup, which was probably one of the biggest shocks the event has ever witnessed. ESPN has taken the approach that this is one of the biggest matches of the tournament and that the two nations are bitter rivals.

The fact is, however, English fans don’t view this game to be nearly as important as the Americans do. In fact, most soccer fans don’t consider it an important match, yet alone consider the relationship between the two sides to be anything close to a rivalry.

Why am I telling you this? Because you can use the same tactics ESPN has used in order to promote your business, too. By focusing on something that is, in a way, true, you can create excitement by pumping it up. It’s all about relativity.

Sure, the rest of the world may not recognize the teams as rivals or the game as important, but ESPN has found a way to make the game resonate with Americans. This, in turn, has created a buzz about the game and tournament and ESPN is looking forward to record numbers for their broadcasts. This is important to note, because a recent “New York Times” article reported that the network invested a record amount of cash in its coverage — they truly expect it to be the best in the world.

If you want to effectively market your business, take the same approach. Find that one magical, unique factor that will touch people’s hearts and minds. Don’t simply talk about the product and what it does, but really narrow your focus to invoke emotion. If people can relate to what you’re selling and you have shown that they need it, rather than them just being told, they’re much more likely to open their wallets.
