I’ll cut right to the chase; the answer is “yes.”
You could make a fortune off of someone else’s talents and skills. All it takes is a good decision and an ability to see the possibilities of another person’s idea.
Here’s an example. Do you know what the most famous English-language song in the world is? Well, it’s “Happy Birthday.” Now, did you know that a smart young woman copyrighted this song? That’s right! Each time this song is played on air, she gets a royalty.
A quick recap of the story goes like this: Two Kentucky sisters created a melody for a song called “Good Morning to All.” This was back in 1893, and it was using in school by teachers to welcome students to class and was published in a songbook. Now, no one knows when the song title and lyrics changed, but nowadays everyone would recognize that melody as the “Happy Birthday” song.
Well, that song had entered the public domain, until a third sister sprang into action and filed a suit that stated the song bore too much resemblance to her family’s “Good Morning to All.” The judge agreed, and the third sister secured a copyright for a song that was once part of the public domain. Now it’s been used in who knows how many movies, radio shows, TV shows and commercials, and that means royalties galore.
That’s the key for you to consider. The public domain. Keep your eyes open for possibilities of getting licenses for things you never came up with, somebody else’s work that is not yet their intellectual property, because they haven’t done as much with it as they could have. You simply take this work, add your own personal touch if you like, and package it as your own product. You just have to change your way of thinking to one that always considers the licensing potential of what you see.
