Choose Your Friends Wisely
Everybody has a friend who, simply put, isn’t shy with their money. Or sometimes it’s a group of friends. They like to go out, have a good time and spend big bucks in the process. It doesn’t matter if it’s a birthday party, a night on the town, a weekend getaway or all the newest gadgets and gizmos. The fact is that when they see something they want, money becomes no object.
If you can afford to live like this, then way to go. For many of us, however, this simply isn’t reality. The truth is that the people you hang around with greatly influence how much money you spend, and how much debt you accumulate.
As much as you may love or enjoy these people, if you can’t afford to spend a lot of time with them, you’ll have to set some boundaries. After all, maintaining control of your finances is of the utmost importance.
Now, it can be embarrassing to tell people that your reasoning for not doing something is because you can’t afford it. If you can’t afford to go out for a big birthday celebration at an expensive restaurant, get the newest 3D television set, or jump on a plane down to Mexico for the weekend, don’t worry about it. Just tell them — they’re your friends, they should understand. They aren’t competing with you, and you shouldn’t compete with them!
If you don’t want to outright say it, suggest alternatives. Instead of a big night out, suggest hosting some friends at your place to keep it on the cheap. Find other activities that are fun and cost-effective and add a little more value to your time. There are countless things you can do with friends as opposed to going out and dropping big dollars!
In some cases, it may be necessary to change your focus in life. Instead of thinking about the things you need and want to acquire, take a good look at all the things you already have. I’m not only talking about material goods, but all the other things that so many of us have, but often ignore. Things like relationships, family and hobbies. The things we enjoy. The truth is that there are so many things out there that don’t require money at all!
If your friends are an expensive group to be around, try suggesting things to do that are more money-conscious. They’ll likely appreciate your situation and thank you for your great ideas and the great time they had!
