Info Marketing Gold Could Be Hidden in the Garage

If you want to start your own business, there is the idea that you need all kinds of fancy materials and gimmicks to get going. It’s a funny myth, but just a myth. You really don’t need any fancy materials, and the resources for a great personal business are usually right in your home.

Info marketers know this. They get their ideas and content from their family, their hobbies and their experiences. But sometimes even they get stumped as to what they can do to create great information content and pass it along to the public.

Like I said, ideas can be close; in your office, from your children, and even in your own garage. Don’t laugh — that three-walled-and-lifting-door room at the front of your house has more info sources in it than you could ever imagine. There’s a good chance yours has some right now. Don’t believe me? Consider these topics:

— Mechanics: The ’55 Chevy restoration, the Honda motorcycle repairs, the tinkering, the welding, the list of what you can fix and create mechanically in the garage is never ending. But you’d be surprised how many out there are clueless about how to make their garage into a neat, well-organized workshop. How much space do you need? Can you create a workbench? How about installing an air compressor? A mechanics’ haven at home can only be created with the proper and safety-conscious know-how of someone has done it. If that’s you, get some info out there.

— Home Carpentry: If bookcases and marquetry are more your bag than carburetors and piston heads, you are also someone who could use the garage as a base of creativity. But like being a mechanic, a carpenter needs space, storage, and the proper arrangement of tools — big ones, too, like band saws and jigs. The organization and maintenance of a home carpentry operation needs info that Home Depot often cannot deliver. An info marketer can and, if this applies to you, it’s time to show people how to get wood processed right in the garage.

— Tools: Related to the two topics above, if you are going to get down and dirty working in the garage, you are also going to need a whole arsenal of tools to do so. Tools are like kids’ toys — they are fun to play with, but often wind up scattered in places they shouldn’t be. What tools are necessary to specific garage ventures and how to store them properly is more valuable to the home handyman than you could imagine. People just need help with organization. If you know your tools and what to do with them, you are more in demand than you think and can keep like-minded types aware with regular information on storage, maintenance, and the newest toys to play with.

— The Home Studio: I always thought that “garage band” was not only an apt title for a lot of club and punk rock bands, but a badge of honor, too. What could be more fun than getting your friends over to jam, party, and create music? The thing is that garages often turned into “garage studios.” Back in the history of rhythm and blues, country, and rock and roll music, owners of record labels like Cobra and performers like Buddy Holly used their garages as home studios to both record and experiment. These days, digital equipment has made it possible to turn your garage into a recording studio worthy of any hot L.A. session house. If you have that love of music and know people who do, too, why not back your car out and start creating a studio space? Your experiences and knowledge of how others could do the same are valuable to similar music recording types the world over.

— The Rec Room: I have to include this one, partly because of a paper route customer from my youth. He had a smaller house and decided to move his couch, fireplace, magazine rack, TV, and rug out to his garage. Within a few weeks, he was out watching the hockey game with his buddies and invited me to do so while on my route. Your garage is not just for storage and parking cars. It’s a great place to create a social space. But some people have an old or a dilapidated garage and don’t know how to make it a recreation room. If you do, pass it along in newsletter or info book form. Your skills of comfort creation in the garage can influence and inspire other homeowners greatly.

The garage is something that is so common in this part of the world that it’s often seen as just another room in the house. But it can be more than that. People can have fun, do business, and relax in that big open room, all the while creating a space that is unique to them. If you are a garage “expert” and know how to create those special spaces, that’s one more info area you can build your success on.
