How to Quit Your Day Job

Congratulations. You’ve done it. You’ve hashed out a business plan, have put money into your start-up and now you’re ready to be a full-time entrepreneur.

There’s just one thing holding you back from diving right in and taking your new project head-on. And that one thing is your job. You like getting your weekly paycheck. You don’t quite want to give up your benefits and there’s still a lingering doubt in your mind that maybe your idea isn’t quite ready.

If you’re sitting on this fence, well, you’re not alone. Making the leap can be emotionally taxing and downright scary.

A colleague of mine recently spent six months trying to cut the strings from his employer and move on to the self-employed world. He just couldn’t bring himself to quit, but he knew he had to.

In the end, he was able to resign and, while he no longer works for this company, he left on good terms with the ability to jump right back in should he need to. How did he do it?

His first step was to evaluate his contribution to the company. He worked hard, he worked long hours and he consistently made his sales goals. He knew he was in great standing with his supervisors, and that he was an employee they wouldn’t want to see go.

He wrote out all of his accomplishments and made sure he started off his quitting discussion with these. Next, he considered the implications of his departure. Who would be affected most? What steps would be taken to replace him? He came up with answers to these questions and got ready to present them to his supervisors.

And, finally, he was honest. He didn’t make up a story about a sick aunt and he didn’t come in armed with complaints. Burning a bridge is no way to move forward, because there may come a time when you need to retrace your steps.

If you’re getting ready to make the same jump and tackle the entrepreneurial life, I suggest following this example; it could even help you when you least expect it.
