How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

People often ask me about how I became a successful entrepreneur and what advice I have for them.

Obviously, there are a number of factors that have contributed to my success — and the success of countless entrepreneurs — but I find the one that is most significant is doing something that you truly love. Without passion as your prime motivator, it becomes much easier to fail.

If you choose to start your own business with money and fame as your prime motivator, it’s unlikely you will succeed. After all, if your heart’s not in it, it will reflect in your work.

Furthermore, starting a business requires all kinds of time and effort. If you’re not doing something you enjoy, you probably won’t put in the required time or work as hard as you should
be.

Finally, if you don’t enjoy your work you won’t strive to make your product or service bigger and better than the competition. Instead, it will be easy to settle for the status quo.

It’s important that when you start a business, you work to grow it organically and take things as they come. Although a business plan is a great help and necessary for funding, it shouldn’t be written in stone. It should adapt easily to the direction of the business and what feels right to you. When your plans become too rigid, it limits your creativity and potential for innovative ideas and the success that can follow.

Therefore, don’t start out with the goal of building an empire and getting filthy rich; it’s far too big a concept in the early stages. Sure, it’s great to think big and have lofty aspirations, but, at the end of the day, building a successful business is about taking a series of steps. If you try to leap too far, too fast, it’s likely you’ll come crashing down. Set small-scale goals and watch your business grow.

Remember, when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. The more passion you have, the more you’ll put into it and the better your business should be.
