How to Set Attainable Goals
When trying to persuade someone, you must have a goal that you’re working to achieve. It could be anything at all, like trying to get someone to accompany you to the museum,
finding new customers for your product, or eating more meals at home instead of in restaurants. No matter what, you need to know what you’re working towards during the process.
The best way have a clear idea of what you’re looking for is to sit back and think. This way, when it comes time to say and do the right thing, you’ll be prepared. You will have the right
evidence ready to go and you’ll know precisely how to use it to achieve your goal.
It may be worthwhile to sit down and draft a roadmap for your conversation. It can act as a guide that shows you where to start, when to make various parts, and direction to go in. The
structure a roadmap provides will come in very handy as you begin to hone your persuasion skills. By carefully charting what you do and say, you can come up with the most effective
methods of persuasion. The methodology behind your roadmap should be something like this:
— Providing logical reasoning. Basically, you’re trying to answer any possible “why?” question that could arise. There could be a bunch, so it’s important to take some time and think
about it.
— Relating your reasoning to the person you’re trying to persuade. Knowing what the other person wants is almost as important as knowing what you want, but we’ll get to that a little later.
— Determining the facts that you wish to use to support what you’re saying.
— Implementing your own feelings. It is important to move away from strictly numbers and statistics to take on a personal stance as well. When you can introduce your own personality
and emotions into the discussion, it can be a good thing. We’ll also talk a little bit more about this later. Your roadmap should also cover how you will relate these feelings to your counterpart.
Part of knowing what you want also means being honest. This means that you’ve got integrity and won’t dig yourself any holes. When you start telling lies and being unethical, things
can spiral quickly. You’ll likely end up running in circles during discussions, which makes you look confused and, to put it bluntly, shady. Another problem with dishonesty when you’re trying to convince someone to do something is that if they do, in fact, agree to what you’ve asked from them, you might not be able to deliver on your end of the bargain when it’s time to pay the piper. This can be detrimental to your relationship with that person and tarnish your reputation forever.
Finally, when you know what you want, you can plan your attack and choose your words carefully, guiding the conversation where you want and accomplishing the goals you’ve set out.
