Micheal Newman’s latest ‘e-Wealth Daily’ article:
Fees: pretty much everybody hates them and, sadly, we all have to pay them. What’s worse than fees? Roaming fees, service fees, usage fees — whatever they are, they’ll always seem like a rip-off, no matter what.
They may come as a big shock, but there are some fees that may actually be worth the cost. They can add value, relieve stress and, at the end of the day, actually end up saving you some money. Today, we’ll take a look at fees that can end up doing you a favor. In another issue, we’ll focus on fees that can, and should, be avoided.
— One fee that’s worth the price is the overdraft protection fee offered by your bank. The fee is usually around $5.00, plus the interest on the funds required. Even if you never have your account go into overdraft — or at least plan on it never happening– the fee is worth it. For even one bounced check over-withdrawal, the cost attached could be much more than the cost of your overdraft protection.
— Some of the most frustrating fees around are cell phone fees. It’s crazy how fast your $20.00/month plan skyrockets to $60.00/month without you having to do much of anything. It’s no doubt that cell phone fees are annoying and costly, but the call display feature is definitely one worth incurring. Having call display can help you save talk-time minutes — and roaming charges — from answering calls you don’t want to take — whether from telemarketers or your annoying cousin!
— If you have a relatively consistent diet, large family or prefer to buy things in bulk, the membership fee you’ll pay at Costco can actually lead you to big-time savings. The key is to shop smart when you’re there and avoid over-shopping.
— Auto-Assistance fees are worth it, as well. Sure, you never know when you’ll need it, but there’s a great chance that, at some point, you will. The annual fee is usually less than the cost of a tow truck ride or the service that you’ll need, so the coverage definitely pays for itself.
Those are a few fees that are worth the charge, as strange as it may seem. You see, the thing with certain fees is that they can actually save you money from time to time. Of course, these times are usually few and far between, so when they present themselves, you should try to take advantage of them.
