Do You Get It?
“Wow, I get it.”
That’s the phrase you want your customers to say the exact instant they see your product for the first time. And that’s what A.J. Khubani of TeleBrands, the company behind many successful infomercials, is looking for when he auditions thousands of inventions and new products.
In a recent “New York Times” article, Khubani laments passing on the “Snuggie” (which has sold millions) and approaches each potential new product or invention with an experienced eye for selling almost everything you can imagine.
And inventors are lining up to meet with Khubani. Adding the iconic “As Seen on TV” logo to their products packaging could be what they need to turn a struggling small business into a
multi-national success.
But, they won’t get there unless their product has the “wow factor.”
The “wow factor” can come from the simplest product with an even simpler design. It can also come from more complex products. But, it isn’t the product itself that brings about the “wow factor.” It’s the problem that the product solves that can make a potential customer say, “Wow, I get it.”
Every inventor starts with a problem. The product is what comes along later, much later.
If you’re still looking for your own big idea, then my suggestion is to start focusing on problems. Get immersed in the problems that affect day-to-day living. It is in these problems that the secret to your success may be waiting.
