Weekend Success Bulletin

There’s an old business standard that is gaining popularity on the Internet.

Think back to the local grocer in your neighborhood from when you were a kid. Do you remember the familiar faces of the clerks and managers or even the storeowner? I know many people remember when you shopped at stores and knew the employees by name.

As our cities have grown and people have sought out the most convenient ways to do their shopping, we’ve lost touch with many (but certainly not all) of the people who actually run these businesses. There’s so much choice that people are less likely to frequent shops as often as they used to. Shopping has become quite anonymous.

Well, the online world, the one you don’t even have to leave your home to enter, is even more anonymous. You can create ambiguous user names and never have to reveal your true self. As a consumer, this can help you protect your identity, but, as a seller, you can simply blend into the crowd. And with millions of competitors, you must learn to stick out.

If you promote products or services online, you may have heard the term “transparency.” Governments are using this term when they reveal how tax money is spent. And big corporations are doing the same. But, for the little guy, do you need to show your personality and reveal your identity online?

If you want to establish lasting business relationships online and if you want to set yourself apart from the faceless crowds, then yes, you want to have a level of transparency online.

I don’t shy away from telling you stories about my family and day-to-day life. If you visit our web site, you’ll see my photo right there on the homepage. I certainly believe in connecting with you as a reader of my newsletters and books. Sure, I’m not going to reveal very personal information, but I want you to share my experiences and learn from them. I’m essentially saying, “Look here; see who I am and how I’ve achieved
success.”

Could I do all of this while hiding behind a clever user name and never using my photo? To some extent, yes, but I would be missing out on the positive connections and experiences I want to create.

Behind every successful business, there is a very successful person. So, why hide?

Consider your own business pursuits. Are you hiding behind a shroud of mystery or are you revealing yourself and the real reasons why customers will want to give you their business?

Sincerely,
Adrian Newman
