Bill Myers’ ‘Tip of the Week’:
Bill Myers Tip of the Week – February 19, 2011
Two of my favorite ‘visit every day’ web sites recently overhauled the design of their sites.
And almost immediately a large number of visitors complained to the site owners, advising them that the new site wasn’t easy to use and was almost impossible to navigate.
The owner’s response was ‘we are not changing back to the old design, so either get used to it, or go away’.
And so far, a lot of formerly loyal ‘visit several times a day’ visitors have taken the site’s response to heart.
We simply have gone away – never to return.
There’s a couple of important lessons here.
First, unless there is a compelling reason to change the design of a successful web site (or product), don’t do it.
And second, if a large number of customers complain that the new design makes the site or product unusable, don’t ignore them or tell them to go somewhere else.
Either go back to the old design, or work with your customers to change the new design so it works for the customer, instead of against them.
Your customer opinions are important. Don’t ignore them, and don’ t say things to them that will drive them away forever.
