Stand Out From Your Competition by Doing This
In most cases — especially in this economy — growing a business means thinking outside of the box. If you want to attract customers, you have to offer an experience that they won’t find anywhere else. Basically, you have to distinguish your business from the competition.
A great way to do this is to tap into the world of do-it-yourselfers. No matter what kind of business you’re in, there is always a do-it-yourself market. On the surface, it may seem like a bad idea — if you teach someone to do something, they won’t buy it from you anymore. But this is rarely the case — plus, there are countless people out there who are willing to pay more for lessons. Showing people how to do it themselves is actually quite a lucrative business on its own.
I recently read about an entrepreneur in New York City who has found a way to make money by offering a unique twist on an American classic.
“Entrepreneur” magazine highlighted a young man named Mark Bello who owns a pizzeria in New York City. And just in case you were unaware, New York City has no shortage of pizzerias. They’re on every block — you couldn’t avoid one if you tried.
What makes this pizzeria different is that, instead just of peddling slices and pies, Bello teaches customers how to make their own delicious pie. And it’s working like gangbusters. People are paying $150.00 for a four-hour session to learn how to make the perfect pie. It’s so popular that restaurant owners from around the world go to the shop, as do customers looking at the lesson as a long-term, money-saving investment. In fact,
there is a waiting list of over two months and Bello is now considering offering pasta lessons, too.
Offering the lessons three days a week, Bello has done something truly amazing — gotten people to pay $150.00 for something they will pay $2.00 for on any street corner in the city. On days when he’s not teaching, he probably sells pizza out of his shop!
Because of the economy, people are now, more than ever, looking for ways to save. Therefore, when they look at his service, they see a number of long-term savings for an upfront fee. They can bake a pizza and have meals for the week. They can entertain friends at their apartments with their pizza skills. In the long run, knowing how to bake a professional grade pizza pays big dividends.
