Overcoming Idea Blocks Like an Expert

Some days it seems like everywhere you turn there’s another big idea.

You take a walk down the street and you’re practically run over by new ideas. You come up with a new product you could try to sell. You come up with a new advertising slogan that could break your sales records. In just a matter of minutes, it feels like you could have ideas to solve anything.

But, then there are the days when nothing seems to be happening. You just stare at a product and nothing comes to you. You just stare at your computer and nothing is happening.

Idea blocks like this happen to everyone. Whether you’re a hotshot marketer at the top of your game or a novice just getting started in the field, idea blocks will happen.

It’s the way that an expert handles idea blocks that sets him apart from the novices. Novices tend to panic; they’ll stress out and sit there fretting over their stalled thoughts.

Not the expert; no way. The experts know that they’re not going to have the answer to everything; in fact, the reason they are experts is that they have learned that ideas take inspiration and, more often than not, inspiration doesn’t just fall into your lap.

Here’s how an expert handles an idea block.

First, the expert remains calm. I’ve seen people pace around a room for hours, talking to themselves and slowly adding more obstacles to their original idea block. In the end, they’ve worn a hole in the carpet and are probably developing some nasty ulcers.

The expert knows that all it takes is a few minutes away from the problem to cool their heads and not begin to worry. Whether is it starting another task or simply going for a walk, a clear and cool head is always more open to new ideas.

Next, the expert searches for inspiration. This could mean looking at the competition or simply surfing the Internet for some interesting idea, even if it has nothing to do with your problem at hand. Like I said, inspiration rarely seeks you out; you have to take the search on yourself and keep looking until you find it.

The next time you find yourself on the verge of an idea block, turn off your computer, put down your pen and, most importantly, stay calm.
