Eight Inexpensive Marketing Strategies to Help Your Business; Part 1
If you’ve just started your own small business, it’s more than likely that you have a very limited budget for various activities. Marketing is extremely important to any business. You have to get the word out to the public, but sometimes that can be expensive.
The good news is that there are a number of marketing strategies that you can do on the cheap, but that can also be very effective. Spending a ton of money on marketing isn’t always the perfect solution. You could have just as much success on a tight budget if you’re committed to making it work.
Here are eight inexpensive marketing strategies to get the word out, create a buzz and keep the customers coming in, time and time again.
1. Have a Contest
Who doesn’t like getting something for free? If you want to create a buzz, hold a contest. This is an especially effective strategy if you have a retail store. Place signs on your windows and inside the store promoting the giveaway.
People who haven’t been into your store before will jump at the chance to win something. Be sure to make the most of this contest. For instance, don’t just give ballots away; give them away with a purchase. That way, you at least have something to show for your efforts.
Secondly, give away something from your store. If you sell a product, then give away something nice that really captures the essence of your business. Something that will create a buzz
when the friends of the winner see it.
You can also choose to have a regular ballot or you can have a small survey for customers to fill out. Have space for their name, address and phone number, as well as a few questions about their wants and needs and how they think you’re doing as a business.
If you do go the route of a survey, make it easy for them to fill out. Your customers won’t want to spend 10 minutes filling something out, even if there’s a chance to win a prize, so keep it simple.
Also, make sure that there aren’t any strings attached to the contest. There’s nothing more irritating than filling out a contest ballot to find later that your e-mail address has been given to other companies.
Most of all, you want to create a buzz. Make a big deal of this contest. If you can afford to have professional signs and/or a display made up, then do so. If not, take the time to create something flashy on your own. Make sure the customer knows that you’re doing this because you appreciate them and their business.
2. Contact the Press
There’s no better form of advertising than the free kind. Community newspapers and trade publications print articles about small/local businesses all the time; all you need is a good pitch.
Publications like community papers and trade publications need content, so all you need to do is to present your business in an interesting manner.
Pitch your story in the form of a well-written press release. Within this release, you should have an interesting angle, something that will grab the editor’s attention. Even though they need content, it doesn’t mean that they will publish any old thing.
Grab their attention by describing an interesting aspect about your life or about the business. Have you won any awards in your past? Is your business innovative in any way? Is your business or are you doing something for the community? What about the environment? Present them with a story that is interesting and expresses what your business is all about.
Having an article in a paper or magazine can provide you with great exposure. Not only is this free advertising, but it also gives you more credibility. People are more likely to pay attention to an article than they would an advertisement.
