How You Can Start a Successful Business From Scratch

It may come as a surprise, but to be a successful entrepreneur with a booming business you don’t always have to be a complete expert from the outset. In fact, there are countless business owners who’ve ventured into unknown waters to start successful businesses from scratch and build fruitful careers.

For example, a friend of mine, upon graduation from university, began working with a major food company. He worked in the advertising department and was responsible for branding a number of products and coming up with the most suitable ways to promote them. After sticking with the job for roughly a year, he left to start his own business with a couple of colleagues.

The business they started was something none of them had experience in — garage renovations. My friend had gone from a well-paying job in the food advertising world — a job in which he’d been formally trained for — to designing and selling garage floor plans. Along with selling the designs — meant to organize people’s garages — they also sell a number of space-saving items, flooring and about anything else you could think of that has to do with an organized garage.

Well, his decision to venture into the unknown has paid off. Since they started the business several years ago, they’ve been featured in magazines and newspapers for their work. Their market is wealthy people who are looking for ways to improve their garages, and the business has grown steadily since its inception. Furthermore, the business has spawned another business for the three of them.

The second company is focused on the “do it yourself” aspect of organizing your garage/home. They began manufacturing shelving units and cabinets to be sold in major retailers across North America to target the middle-class American market who wants to get organized, but can’t afford to pay the big bucks it takes to hire someone to do it for them. At the time of writing, both companies continue to grow substantially and have proven to be quite successful. Not bad for a few guys with virtually no experience in the industry.

The truth is that this is no one-time story. It happens quite regularly. If you want to build a successful business from scratch or in an industry where you have little experience, I’ll show you what to do over the next two days.

One of the keys to building a successful business is taking the right approach. For example, you’re going to want to commit yourself to coming up with a solution for a problem you’ve noticed, rather than just falling in love with a specific product or idea.

Focusing on offering a solution to a problem has a number of impacts. For starters, it helps ensure you maintain a passion for what you’re doing. It means you’ll explore various options and look for different ways to innovate and assist in what you’re doing. Also, it will make the marketing of your business easier. If you have a clear definition of what you’re trying to accomplish and how your business can directly make it happen, you can offer potential customers tangible results.

To find a problem that needs to be fixed, simply look at the things around you that could be improved, or start educating yourself in an area of interest and look for ways to improve a situation.
