Conducting a Successful Info Marketing Seminar
Information marketers are kind of different from other business pros. Sure they operate in almost the same fashion, but they are a little hidden from the public eye.
If you think of the clichéd image of a business pro as a cigar-chomping executive sipping fine espresso in a large office and ordering people about, an info marketer doesn’t really fit that mould. Info marketers are more like lone guns, working quietly and comfortably within the confines of their private office space on their own time, on their own ideas, and almost shut off from the rest of the world. It’s a different way of operating.
Funnily enough, you can look at this from two perspectives. It’s great, as you’re alone doing your own thing. It’s also tough though, as you are shut off from the rest of the world. An information marketer doesn’t get a lot of time to get out and interact with others. Even if one gets the notion to attend a social gathering or conference, you might have to deal with family matters or have a surprise time constraint appear in front of you. In a way, you’re stuck where you are.
Not only does this prevent you from meeting others, but it can also actually prevent you from improving your business. Especially if you’re an information marketer, you thrive on exchanging ideas, getting tips, and corresponding with others like you. Being stuck at home prevents all of these and it can be very difficult to get out into the real world for any sort of human-to-human exchange.
Question: have you ever thought about doing an information seminar?
Whenever this gets mentioned, a lot of business pros get tense. The idea of conducting a class or presentation in front of a bunch of strangers sounds scary. Coupled with this is the added inferiority about what someone feels about themselves — a lot of entrepreneurs think they can’t possibly know anything that they could teach to others and back off altogether.
The truth is that, as a professional info marketer, your knowledge is probably the best there is. You’re creating a living doing what you love. Sure it’s tough, but while you’re doing it, others are dreaming about it in between desk job assignments. You have lots of knowledge to share, so why not share it in a seminar form? You stand to meet others, give tips, and probably generate more success for yourself.
Getting into seminar mode, like most things in info marketing, requires a little preparation. You’ll need a topic to discuss; one that is relevant to being or becoming an information marketer, and one you can provide a good hour to three-hour info session about. Like a teacher or professor, you have to design a lesson plan and maybe even prep some dialogues and/or laptop slides to show your audience. The more thorough your seminar preparation, the more helpful material you can deliver with confidence.
You should also think about advertising your seminar well in advance. It’s worth getting some ads done up and sending them out with your info e-newsletters, to potential interested parties, trade magazines, and local bulletin posting areas. Note the time and place of your session and give a brief summary in the ad. If you want people to come to your info seminar, they are going to have to know about it. Make sure you take the time to do some advertising.
Knowing a good space to hold a seminar helps, too. Now a lot of business pros go the whole way and work to book fancy conference rooms in hotels, complete with catered coffee and sandwiches. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this and, if you have the cash for this, do it. But if you’re not so rich or you prefer something more low key, booking at a local community hall, library auditorium, or meeting center is fine. These places are good enough to deliver a strong seminar comfortably.
Other matters like how much to charge or getting a special registration are worth considering, too. This takes a bit more time, but it goes into the design of your info session and what you want to come away from it with. Some pros opt for a freebie first seminar, while others are stricter about it. It’s all up to you.
Like info products, often the best of source of a good info marketing seminar is you. How you’ve gotten established, where you get info, the roads you have traveled, both wonderful and awful…these are the best materials for info seminars. People will come to hear about what you know. Your only job is like what you do for your other info products — deliver the best info you can to those who desire it. And now you can do it in person, at that.
