Bill Myers Tip of the Week – June 25, 2011

Do you need a tune-up?

I recently read an article that said most men take better care of their cars than they do of their own body.

The article told about how men wouldn’t hesitate to buy new tires, or replace headlights of their cars, but would forever delay doing basic maintenance of their own body.

The article could have been talking about me.

Just ask my wife and she’ll tell you I’ll immediately take care of any required maintenance on my car or motorhome, but will drag my feet when it’s time to get a haircut or a buy a new pair of shoes, or even get my eyes checked.

Here’s an example:

My wife recently walked into my office and asked why I was sitting so far back from my computer screen, and I told her, “It’s the only way I can read what’s on the screen.”

She laughed, and said, “when’s the last time you had your eyes checked?”

I couldn’t remember.  But it had been at least three years.

Since I spend at least eight to ten hours a day in front of my computer either reading or writing or editing video, I really need to be able to clearly see what’s on the screen.

So I shouldn’t have put off an eye examination. Just common sense tells me that.

But we guys don’t always use common sense when it comes to our own health.  We figure we can ‘tough it out’.

In any case, I had my eyes examined yesterday, and needed a new eye-glass prescription.

It was a painless process, not very expensive, and will mean I won’t have to sit so far back to read my computer screen.

The take-away is this:  If you depend on your eyes for your work, get them tested.

When you wear the correct prescription glasses, you won’t have to squint to read, and you’ll be amazed at how everything suddenly appears to be in high definition.

So if you’re squinting while reading this, or are so far back from your screen that you can’t reach out and touch it, you probably should get your eyes checked.
