Bill Myers’ ‘Tip of the Week’:

Bill Myers Tip of the Week – July 02, 2011

===============================================================

While you’re on holiday . . .

For those of us in the US, today is the start of our three day Independence Day holiday weekend.

Many of us will be away from our computers as we celebrate with friends and family.

Unfortunately, internet criminals will use our absence to exploit web and email weaknesses.

For example, they’ll send an email which looks like it’s from PayPal, advising you there is a dispute with your account, and unless you log in, your PayPal account will be closed.

If you click the link and log in, the criminal will have captured your login details.  And he’ll use that information to log into your account, and clean it out.

These are called ‘phishing’ attacks – where you get an email from PayPal, your bank, or your web host, asking you to click a link and log in to check a problem on your account.

You probably already know this, and think you are far too web savvy to fall for one of these scams.  I felt that way too.

That is, until I responded to what looked like a notice from my domain registrar advising that I needed to login and verify ownership of a domain name I had.

Without thinking, I clicked the link in the email, and logged into my domain account.  The log-in didn’t work, and I didn’t bother to try again as it was the start of a holiday weekend.

Unknown to me, my login information was then used to transfer four valuable domain names out of my account, and then sold to unsuspecting buyers.

Since this occurred over a long holiday weekend, it wasn’t until a week later that I discovered the theft.

Fortunately, when I alerted my domain name registrar about the problem, they were able to verify the theft and recover my domains.

In many cases, victims of phishing attacks are not so lucky. They often find their bank or PayPal accounts drained.

So if you get an email urging you to log in to fix a problem with an account you have, never click the link in the email.

Instead, visit the web site by typing the correct site address in your web browser.

Doing this can save you a lot of grief, and keep your accounts from being compromised.

Enjoy your holiday, but don’t let down your guard when it comes to your email and web site security.
