Bill Myers Tip of the Week – July 30, 2011

What I learned while writing my first novel

A few weeks back, I mentioned I was writing a novel with plans to publish it on the Amazon Kindle Platform.

Since then, I’ve been hard a work writing.  And this past week, I finally completed the first draft of the novel.

Over the next two weeks I’ll be doing the final edit, creating cover artwork, and uploading it to Amazon.

While going through the novel writing process, one of the most important things I learned was, ‘start with the right tools’.

By that I mean write your novel using a word processing program that makes it easy to write.  A program that doesn’t get in your way, isn’t difficult to learn, and can format your novel so it is Kindle or print ready when the novel is completed.

The tool that worked best for me was the free OpenOffice Writer program.

By changing just a few settings, OpenOffice Writer let me concentrate on writing my novel without worrying about learning to use the program.

If you want to see how I use OpenOffice writer, or discover other things I learned while writing my novel see the article ‘Ten important things I learned when writing my first novel’ on my website.
